To provide high-impact grants that reach under-served populations, raise the profile of deserving but lesser-known not-for-profit organisations and, highlight unmet needs in our region and increase involvement in philanthropy across Melbourne.
Impact100Melbourne is a group of men and women who love the diversity of their city and want to contribute to its ongoing development through a variety of ways. Impact100 Melbourne was founded in 2013 and made its first grants in December of that year. Currently in our second year, we are gearing up to learn more about our 2014 theme, homelessness.
Members of Impact100Melbourne learn more about charitable organisations doing great work in Melbourne, meet new and interesting people and have fun along the way. It's a collaborative giving group that brings 100 passionate and diverse donors together to make a significant impact through local not-for-profits.
"Being a committee member of Impact100Melbourne has opened my eyes to all the extraordinary grassroots, local charities needing our support. The ability to make such a difference by getting 100 likeminded people together is simple, as it is effective. Many of us have been given so much, that much is expected in return. To start at home, in our own community, focusing on different needs each year, is a wonderful way to gain insight into Melbourne and all its depth and diversity."
• on average, Australians give only 0.36% of their taxable income to charities; and
• less than 38% of individual tax returns claimed a deduction for a gift to charity.
The concept of Impact100Melbourne resonated strongly with me immediately. It appeared to be the most engaging, constructive and fun way to address these statistics."
The giving circle aims to develop an annual giving base of $100,000, ideally contributed through 100 people – friends, family, colleagues or like-minded individuals – each donating $1,000 to the fund. The donations are fully tax-deductible and are deposited into the Impact100Melbourne collective giving account held with Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation.
Each year $100,000 will be distributed as a large impact grant to a Melbourne-based charitable organisation who, as one of four shortlisted applicants, meets the fund's grant criteria and aligns with its annual giving theme.
