Today we mark World Homeless Day. Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation has a longstanding commitment to alleviating homelessness and recognises that there are many factors that may lead to a person being without a safe, secure and stable home environment.

We work to better understand the core, underlying issues that drive homelessness and, most importantly, to put these findings into best practice interventions that prevent entry and entrenchment in homelessness.

The lack of affordable housing is one of the primary causes of homelessness. We support the development of quality affordable housing, which is sustainable, well-designed, and built in locations that have access to transport, amenities, schools and employment - increasing the life opportunities of residents.

We all have a role to play in addressing this issue and we believe that philanthropy is in a unique position to lead cross-sector collaboration and fund social innovation.

With homelessness on the rise in recent years, we want to encourage community awareness and dispel stereotypes that can persist. The Foundation has funded the inaugural Victorian Homelessness Media Awards to highlight the many contributing factors that can lead to a person experiencing homelessness and drive a positive community conversation about solutions.
