Flower Day blooms once again

Brighten the lives of Victorian Women and Girls – Buy a Flower Day Pin

Today Melbourne will once again come into bloom as the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation celebrates the return of its traditional Flower Day, raising money for women and girls in the community who experience disadvantage.

Flower Day lapel pins will be on sale until Friday 10 May for $5 from selected CBD retail outlets including Henry Bucks and Alannah Hill, and a number of florists and Bank of Melbourne branches in the city.

Catherine Brown, chief executive officer of the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, expressed her delight at the re-launch of this appeal, "As the Foundation celebrates 90 years of inspiring philanthropy since its establishment in 1923, this year's reinvigorated Flower Day is most significant.

"The Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation through the decades has sought to address the critical social issues of the day; during the first Flower Day appeal held in 1925, fresh flowers pins were sold by women and girls to support hospitals and kindergartens.

Today, homelessness is one of the Foundation's key impact areas and in light of the 9,810 Victorian women identified as homeless in last year's Census, proceeds from the 2013 appeal will be directed to charities that assist women in times of crisis and offer accommodation, counselling and support," Ms Brown said.
