Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation to match Feed Melbourne donations

May 30, 2011

Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation announced today it would support Feed Melbourne by matching donations up to $250,000 as part of its commitment to helping people living in disadvantage in Melbourne.
Feed Melbourne raises money for food charities and community food programs that provide meals and food parcels to people experiencing disadvantage and homelessness in Melbourne.
The Foundation’s chief executive officer Andrew Chappell said Feed Melbourne was an important fundraising appeal to which everyone should donate.
“No person in Melbourne should go hungry. The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation will match donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to $250,000 to Feed Melbourne,” said Mr Chappell.
Feed Melbourne was first launched in 2009 by Leader Community Newspapers and food service charity FareShare, and has since raised and distributed over $500,000 to more than 40 food charities across Melbourne. This year with the support of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Feed Melbourne is aiming to raise $500,000.
At least 25,000 meals are served, and over 7000 food parcels are provided by community food programs every week in Melbourne. Each year more than 300,000 people across Melbourne and Victoria are unable to afford to buy food and experience ‘food insecurity’.
“Food charities across Melbourne are struggling to meet demand, which has been increasing steadily over the past five years. They are only providing two-thirds of what is needed. More and more people are turning to food charities for support once they have paid their rent or mortgage and bills.
“The Foundation believes so strongly in Feed Melbourne and its mission that a decision was made by our Board of Management to match donations in an effort to boost fundraising. This has never been done before in the history of the Foundation,” added Mr Chappell.
Funds raised will be distributed to food charities and community food programs to purchase microwaves, storage, fridges, freezers, cool rooms, transport and food so they can provide meals and food parcels to people who ask for help.
