Signature grants drive innovation

April 27, 2010

Signature Grants from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation are making significant headway in alleviating homelessness in Melbourne.

The signature grants support two programs within Melbourne’s Road Home program, both deploy very different, highly innovative approaches to entrenched problems.

The Salvation Army’s 24/7 Melbourne’s Road Home program is based on a 24-hour hotline to a Salvos’ crisis response team.

Anyone can call 1800 COMMUNITY if they believe a homeless person in central Melbourne needs help. The program is funded by a $876,000 Signature Grant.

The impact of trauma in contributing to chronic homelessness is the focus of the Sacred Heart Mission’s pioneering Journey to Social Inclusion (J2SI) program.

A Signature Grant of $750,000 from the Foundation is helping to fund J2SI’s intensive approach which involves a three-year commitment to each client, who gets a case worker, fortnightly visits to a psychologist, skills development and specialised mental health and drug and alcohol support.
