Today the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation announced a record grants distribution of $8.1 million to over 400 charities providing health and welfare services to Melbourne's disadvantaged.
The announcement was made at the annual Celebration of Giving, a special event hosted by the Foundation's President Lord Mayor John So.
The Lord Mayor welcomed 400 charitable recipients and special guests Governor of Victoria Professor David de Kretser and Mrs de Kretser to the Melbourne Town Hall.
The Foundation's CEO Mr Andrew Chappell said that the Foundation had increased its fundraising efforts to enable a 100 per cent increase in funds available for distribution from $4M in 2007, to $81.M in 2008.
"Especially in these economic times, it is important for the Foundation to continue to be a reliable source of funding for charities across Melbourne.
"We were concerned that we received a 55 per cent increase in requests for funding this year, and through our fundraising efforts and new granting process have been able to meet these demands. "
