Remembering a Loved One
To ensure the memory of their beloved son remained alive forever the McCaffrey family established a charitable fund account with the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation. We are honoured that they wanted to share their personal story with us.

The Rory McCaffrey Reconciliation Fund was established following Rory’s unexpected death on 29 December 2011. Rory died just two days before his 17th birthday. His friends have described him as a genuine, kind, insightful, often hilariously funny and inspirational young man. He had an ability to think freely, feel deeply and enjoy simply.
Rory’s strong sense of social justice originated from family values but were nurtured and consolidated through his secondary education. As a student of The Geelong College he attended an exchange program with Shalom College in Townsville in year 9 and a two week Indigenous immersion in central Australia in year 10. Both experiences had a profound impact on his values and thinking.
Rory was shocked that two worlds exist within our Australian community. He came home with an understanding of how much should be learnt from Indigenous heritage and culture.
Giving to the Rory McCaffrey Reconciliation Fund will promote reconciliation awareness and projects amongst Indigenous and non-Indigenous young Australians to improve health and education outcomes and close the gap. It provides an opportunity to drive social change through philanthropy.
It is also a way of honouring Rory’s belief that we, who have so much, cannot sit by and watch those who do not.
