2009 Grants Recipients

Major Grants

In 2009 eleven charitable organisations received a Major Grant under the categories of Health, Family and Life Care. These grants have been funded through the Eldon and Anne Foote Trust of the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation.

The categories identified as priority areas for Major Grant considerations were as follows:

Family

  1. Young people at risk of or experiencing disengagement from education
  2. Refugee and asylum seekers
  3. Families with complex needs

Health

  1. Inequalities in access to primary health care
  2. Gambling and addictive behaviours
  3. Chronic disease management

Life Care

  1. Support services to alleviate the impact of drought upon Victorian communities
  2. Provision of employment and social engagement opportunities for people with mental and physical disabilities
  3. Development and implementation of projects designed to address and alleviate domestic crises.

Family

VACRO "One Ocean" program.  In conjunction with the Greater Dandenong Community Health Service, providing support to Pacific Islander youth who tend to miss out on various cultural aspects that can affect their behaviour, relationships and lifestyle choices.

Brenda House "Dispersed Refuge Model Specialised Children's Worker". Providing direct assistance to children and their mothers who have experienced domestic violence.

Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Inc "Strengthening Asylum Seeker families, Strengthening Communities". Continuation of the Foodbank and Material Aid programs, providing essential food items for distribution to refugees who are currently awaiting determination of their refugee status.

Baptcare "The Sanctuary Project". A transitional housing project for male asylum seekers on bridging visas who have no right to work, Medicare or income support.
 

Health

The Gawler Foundation "Cancer Self Help Healing & Wellbeing Program".  A “self-help” program offered to people from low socio-economic backgrounds who would not otherwise be able to participate.

South Eastern Centre Against Secual Assault (SECASA). Using internet technologies, to enable young people who have experienced child sexual assault or family violence to receive helpful information through a non-threatening first point of contact with trained counsellors.

Youth Substance Abuse Service (YSAS) “Primary Health Care Service”.  Meeting the needs of young people  within the south-east growth corridor who are at risk of or experiencing disengagement from mainstream health and welfare services, with particular focus on young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria (EDFV)  “Caring About Recovery Program’.  Facilitating “Carers’ Forums” and “Building Hope” workshops seeking to helpaddress the chronic needs of people experiencing this particular illness

 

Life Care

Second Bite  “Melbourne Food Expansion Project”.  Purchase of additional food collection and delivery vans to provide better and more frequent service.  

Impact Support Services “Dating Service for People with Disabilities”.  Focusing on the importance of relationships and life skills development for those with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Travellers Aid “Travel Related Emergency Relief Service Delivery Model”.  Development, pilot and delivery of an innovative, cost-effective service model for travel-related emergency relief across Melbourne and throughout the state.
